The Russian women’s gymnastics team beat USA to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics women’s gymnastics final which held on Tuesday.
Russia’s win breaks a decade long winning streak by the USA women’s team at the Olympics gymnastics.
It also seals the Russian team’s dominance in the sport for this year’s Olympics as the Russian men’s team also whisked home the gold medal on Monday.
Despite many expectations for her performance, USA’s gymnastics star, Simone Biles had to pull out of the teams’ final competition due to a medical issue.
“Official statement: ‘Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue.” A tweet by the USA Gymnastics verified Twitter page read.
While particulars of the medical issues were not disclosed it was said that the gymnast “…will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.”
According to Sky News, her withdrawal came after she struggled at the vault stage of the finals which held earlier on Tuesday. She was later seen leaving the sporting arena with the team doctor, but returned to cheer her teammates with her right leg wrapped.
The 24-year old world champion had earlier opened up about the pressure she felt competing in the 2020 Olympics after a less than perfect performance on Sunday.
With a post on her Instagram page on Monday, Biles made it known that while she was able to perform, “It wasn’t an easy day” or her best day.
“I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times. I know I brush it off and make it seem like pressure doesn’t affect me but damn sometimes it’s hard hahaha!” She said
Vladislava Urazova, Viktoriia Listunova and Angelina Melnikova of the Russian team clinched gold with a score of 169.528, while Team USA won silver with 166.096 and Great Britain bronze with 164.096.
