A group, the Niger Delta Rights Advocates (NDRA), has accused the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, of handpicking the forensic auditors for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
It also accused members of the interim management committee (NDDC) of the NDDC of sponsoring jingles and adverts calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to make their appointments permanent.
NDRA, in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt and signed by its spokesman, Darlington Nwauju, insisted that claims of how billions of naira have been recovered from erring contractors were mainly exaggerated.
The statement reads in part: “The NDRA observes that more than 240 days after Mr President’s order for a forensic audit of the NDDC, nothing concrete has taken place. In fact, it was just a few weeks ago that forensic auditors who were handpicked by the Honourable Minister, through a largely opaque process were announced to the public.
“As soon as the ‘handpicked’ forensic auditors were announced, the NDDC IMC itself began a telemundo series; entertaining us daily with bogus revelations of how billions of naira have been recovered from erring contractors.
Most of these claims, we submit, are mainly exaggerated, aimed at playing to the gallery on one hand and scripting a tenure elongation plot on another hand.
“The NDRA finds it fantastically embarrassing for a Management team saddled with a Presidential order to clean-up the NDDC, would be sponsoring jingles and adverts calling on Mr President to make their appointments permanent!
“How unpatriotic can this IMC be? How have we descended so low as to lose our consciences in the quest for worldly acquisition of power rather than making use of God-given privileges to serve our own people?”
